Dr. Dawn Irons Ph.D LPC-S

Hello! I am Dr. Dawn Irons, Ph.D, LPC-S, LPCC-S, BCPCC. I have been counseling since 2010, and I genuinely still love it. I see my job as someone who reminds the Phoenix they were born to rise from the ashes!

The one common thread that runs through almost every client story is trauma. I learned early on that talk therapy has its place, but it will never be enough to help heal a dysregulated nervous system created by trauma. If the mind dysregulates the nervous system, that triggers bodily responses, naturally leading to spiritual hopelessness.  As a clinician, it is my role to treat you as a whole person: Mind, Body, and Spirit.

Trauma Survivor: Sometimes it Takes One to Know One

My favorite scripture is found in 2 Corinthians 1:3-4. This has become my life verse. Everything I do, have experienced, and how I interact in the therapy room flows from this timeless truth. This passage speaks of “The God of All Comfort” and how He comforts us in all our trials and tribulations SO THAT we will be able to comfort others in the way that God himself has comforted us.

Throughout childhood, adolescence, and becoming an adult, I saw first-hand how God healed some of the most traumatic events in my life (watching a stepdad hold a gun to my mom’s head, escaping in the night for safety as he poured gasoline over my mom’s car so we could not leave). There were other traumatic experiences, such as sexual assault and being stalked in a time when there were no stalking laws, and “rape” was defined legally as a stranger assault.

I battled a life-threatening chronic illness that included brain surgery. I learned more than I ever wanted to know about vaccines after dealing with a vaccine-injured child of my own, and also surviving the loss of seven pregnancies before my illness was diagnosed.

I know how trauma can affect the course of one’s life if not addressed.

I have the great privilege of seeing the promise of God turn all this around for good every time I sit in my office and begin a relationship with a new client. Because He has comforted me, I am now able to comfort and help you heal with the comfort I have known from God.

My Paradigm Shift

When I learned the capacity of the brain to heal itself when given what it needs (by addressing mind, body, and spirit), it completely changed the way I did therapy. EMDR has been one of the most powerful tools in my toolbox that helps people get their lives back.

Having done the deep dive into the black box warnings on all psychotropic medications made me take a healthy step back and pause before quickly recommending a pharmaceutical remedy for a problem. Research shows a client is equally likely to be helped through a wholistic approach and with far fewer side effects.

I am not anti-medication. Let me be clear about that. But I do think it should be the last option and not the first line of defense, especially considering the long-term side effects of these medications, including cognitive decline, early dementia, and tardive dyskinesia. You can read more about my Paradigm Shift here.
