Sharon Mendez LPC Associate
I’m Sharon Mendez LPC Associate in Denver City, TX. I grew up in the small town of Haskell, which holds a special place in my heart. Life there was simple, filled with a sense of community and warmth that shaped the person I am today.
Learning to Fly
When it came to school, things didn’t always come easy for me. I had to work hard for every grade, every achievement, and every opportunity. I suppose my motivation to become a counselor likely comes from my own efforts to try and understand why life seemed easier for others than it did for me. I was driven by a deep curiosity to uncover the reasons behind this perception, and over time I’ve realized that most people don’t necessarily have it easier or better—they’re just navigating their own unique struggles in ways we might not see.
Getting Better at Getting Better!
After starting a family of my own and welcoming two children, I decided to return to school to pursue a master’s degree in school counseling. Balancing motherhood (with a one-year-old!), marriage, and a rigorous graduate program was no small feat, but my desire to help others kept me moving forward.
There were many late nights when I stayed up studying after my children were asleep and early mornings when I squeezed in assignments before anyone else woke up. There were moments of self-doubt, wondering if I was capable of handling it all. Earning my master’s degree was more than a personal achievement; it was proof that resilience and grit could overcome barriers. I became the first person in my family to earn a college degree, a milestone that made me incredibly proud, and it paved the way for others in my family.
A Solid Work Ethic
I thank my parents for instilling a solid work ethic in me. My parents are not college graduates, but they did understand the importance of an ongoing education. I remember my mom studying medical terms to become a phlebotomist and struggling through it, but she did it. I recall my dad driving to school 180 miles each day to advance himself in his trade. I credit their desire to give their family a better future and the example they set as the driving forces behind my and my brother’s success.
One Day, One Step at a Time, and We Got This!
Becoming a therapist had always been my dream, though there were times I doubted it would ever come true. For one, navigating higher education as a first-generation college student was uncharted territory. I often struggled with imposter syndrome, questioning whether I truly belonged or was capable of succeeding. Financial pressures and the responsibilities of balancing school with work and family life also added layers of difficulty. At times, I was overwhelmed, and I worried, I might never finish. Yet, with the unwavering support of my husband of 20 years and family, I pushed through the challenges, and my dream became a reality. Today, I am living proof that hard work and perseverance can open doors we never imagined possible.
Now, as a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate, I draw on my experience every day, understanding firsthand the power of advocacy, cultural awareness, and the importance of being a trusted guide for others navigating their own paths.
