My Story

My childhood seemed perfect until it wasn’t. My parents’ marriage was always challenging for them, seemingly more so than most couples. Their business failures led to financial hardships, leading to more marriage turbulence, and ending in a fast divorce. My parents got back but my mother unexpectedly passed away a few months later leaving my father and I to do this family thing by ourselves with his unorthodox work hours. I got comfortable being a latchkey kid hanging out by myself hiding my feelings confident they would go away on their own. The adults in my life kept telling me I should go to a counselor but the thought of talking to a counselor was truly terrifying.
Support From Unexpected Places
In high school I was encouraged to become active in a school organization by someone I viewed as my “surrogate mom.” She also led me to the education field because I greatly admired her (still do) and wanted to follow in her footsteps. I absolutely loved teaching and working with my students, but I found myself wanting to help more than I could in my classroom so I decided to go back and get my school counseling certification. I really wanted to be a school counselor students felt comfortable to be around, one that was visible and approachable. And I still had not seen a therapist for my own needs.
Everything Comes Together for Good
My childhood pains and some adult relationship wounds were still rolling around waiting to be dealt with so I finally found myself a therapist and got busy and did the work. Some of those hurts I had been lugging around for over half my life. I know you know what I am talking about and yes, talking to a licensed professional really does help! I am living proof.
I became a school counselor and fully intended for that to be my last professional job. I will retire from my school district in the near future but I still feel led to help more people. After schools opened back up in 2020 post COVID, the landscape was drastically different. I felt being a school counselor was somewhat limiting. My rural community did not have enough access to mental health resources. Parents needed more resources than they were able to access to get to help raise their babies. Children and adolescents need quality mental health care now, not several months from now. We need more mental health professionals in our rural areas.
As I was toying around with the idea of getting my LPC license, I encountered a particularly devastating situation as a school counselor that left me feeling like my hands were tied to be of any help. That was the catalyst that led me back to school again to finish up my LPC coursework and licensure.
